Balcombe Retreat – Mornington is within walking distance to the “village” atmosphere of Main Street and beaches. We have lived in Mornington for 30 years and know all its secrets and special events
Mornington is a dream location, and the pairing of seaside charm and rich wine country is at the heart of its appeal. With golden beaches, vineyard-dotted hills and dramatic wilderness, there is so much to see and do in the Mornington Peninsula. If you want adventure, there are memorable activities like three hour dolphin encounters (November – April) and stunning coastal hikes. Foodies love the world-class wineries (known for chardonnay and pinot noir in particular) and renowned restaurants indulge in local epicurean delights. It’s the perfect place to switch off from the world around you.
Adventure gardens, marine activities and iconic attractions are here for the thrill seekers.
Mornington Peninsula is such a compact region that its sights and delights are all within an easy drive of each other; so base yourself with us at Balcombe Retreat and explore at a leisurely pace.
Top things to do:
Get a lay of the land from the uninterrupted views over Port Phillip Bay and across to Melbourne from the vantage point of Arthurs Seat Eagle. After the gentle 30-minute (return) gondola, explore the walking tracks of Seawinds Gardens.
Here there are kangaroos in the wild and other native animals such as echidnas, owls and nightjars. The BBQs are exceptionally clean and the playground safe and enjoyable. In Autumn we love to go there and kick the Autumnal leaves.
If you want you can hit Red Gum BBQ, a 10-minute drive away in the neighboring hinterland wine region of Red Hill and Main Ridge. Here, a finger-licking American-style barbecue awaits.
Don’t forget when you get home to Balcombe Retreat it just might be time to watch that sunset and drink your complimentary sparkling wine.
The next day you can spend your morning in Sorrento, a picturesque village near the western tip of the Mornington Peninsula, a 30-minute drive from Cape Schanck.
If you’re in town between November and April, be sure to visit Sunny Ridge for strawberry picking season. This hands-on experience will delight the young ones, and the rewards are truly delicious.
And what’s a holiday without ice-cream? Indulge at Mornington Peninsula Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. Or wait until you get back to Mornington where there are four Gelati shops with homemade Gelati.
When it’s time to wine and dine and enjoy what the area is most famous for, don’t miss lunch at one of the Mornington Peninsula’s award-winning
restaurants in and around the Red Hill and Main Ridge wine region. Choose from Laura at Pt Leo Estate, Doot Doot Doot at Jackalope or Ten Minutes by
Tractor, among others. We have a brochure for you that lists them all.
Don’t forget to book The Peninsula Hot Springs. This award-winning natural hot springs, including an inviting assortment of thermal mineral pools and private baths, is a chance for all ages to rejuvenate, and The Bath House boasts a dedicated family area. You will need to book ahead as this is very popular.
Other activities that are popular is the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park where you can feed the animals, have a photo with a koala and enjoy a picnic.
